About Ignite

We design beautiful places for people.
Spaces that enhance and enrich their environment.
That deliver a profound and vibrant sense of place.
And that create harmony between the built and natural worlds.

Design Excellence. Brilliantly Executed.

Ignite is a multi-disciplinary design firm specialising in architecture, interior design, master planning and urban design. We bring a dynamic and innovative approach to delivering world class design solutions that are both people-oriented and visually inspiring. With place making at the heart of our practice, we are dedicated to fostering engaged and vital communities.

Function Driven. Future Focused.

The Ignite point of difference is a rigorous design process that marries creativity with functionality. We pride ourselves in our ability to work empathetically and collaboratively with all stakeholders, and to curate every element of a design throughout the project’s lifespan. Ambitious and forward thinking, we don’t hesitate to defy convention, and our clients value our ability to stay ahead of the curve and forecast future trends.

Past Experience. Present Expertise.

With over 30 years’ experience, Ignite is now home to a global team of 160+ professionals across five design studios. The diversity of our experience and strong team culture allows us to take a fully integrated, holistic design approach to projects of varying scale and complexity, both local and international. Our scope of work covers a range of industry sectors from commercial to residential, retail to entertainment, hospitality to hotels.

Technology & Innovation

Tools such as BIM, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are an integral part of our design process because they offer compelling efficiencies to the process and our clients’ role in that process. This starts with increased capacity to work collaboratively with consultants and contractors, and ends with a more experiential consultation process with our clients, their partners and the project’s wider stakeholder group.

We network with our peers to make sure that we are current, and that we are offering clients best practice BIM processes. We also maintain strong relationships with consultants in associated disciplines like engineering, building and landscape architecture, so that we are equipped to resolve cross-disciplinary design issues early on.

Ignite’s practice is founded on a set of core values that speak to our aspirations and our desire to deliver the very best for our clients. These values have been fundamental to Ignite since its inception 30 years ago.

These values are enacted within a framework that filters and distills ideas down to their most essential requirements; a rigorous process that provides focus and efficiencies for the project team. In this way, functional planning, commercial viability, build-ability, technology integration, and aesthetic decisions are informed, justified and communicable to the client.

A commitment to developing and supporting our people; a strong team culture; and the ability to establish trusted partnerships with clients and business partners is, we believe, the catalyst for our success over three decades. However, it is placemaking that lies at the heart of our practice and that inspires our teams to see every project as the chance to leave a legacy.

Originally known as Anderson Street Architects, Ignite was founded by Peter Anderson and Geoff Street in 1987. Jeremy Whelan joined the company as a senior architect that same year and became Managing Director five years later.

Today Jeremy continues to lead the company and has overseen its growth from a small, predominantly retail-focused, Auckland-based practice to a multi-disciplinary firm with five studios across Australia and New Zealand and an Australasian project portfolio.

In November 2017, Ignite’s Australian studio received certification for the provision of master planning, architectural services, interior design services and retail design management in accordance with the following standards:

- ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management Systems
- ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management Systems and
- AS/NZS 4801:2001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

Achieving certification under these three standards has enabled Ignite’s Australian business to comprehensively interlink environmental and occupational health and safety criteria with our quality management system, which brings these criteria to the fore when examining design solutions for our clients.

Ignite’s New Zealand business is currently undergoing the application process for ISO certification.
